An essential part of any heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning system is the air handler, which is used to condition and circulate air throughout a building. Air handling systems are typically housed in a large metallic box, and comprise multiple parts; these can include a blower or fan, heating and cooling elements, filters racks or chambers, a humidifier, a mixing chamber, a heat recovery device, vibration isolators, sound attenuators, dampers, and controls. Air handling systems typically connect to ductwork that both distributes air throughout the building and returns it to the handling unit, but sometimes air is discharged to and returned from the served space directly, without ductwork.

Small air handling systems designed for local use are called terminal units. Some terminal units are simplified designs, including only an air filter, coil, and blower; these simplified units are often called blower coils or fan coil units. Some large air handlers condition both re-circulated air outside air, while others, known as makeup air units, condition only outside air. Air handlers designed for rooftops and other outdoor applications are known as packaged units.
